Affogato

The first time we had Affogato was when we traveled to Europe in the spring of 2012. Quaint, street side markets featured a variety of gelato, coffee, pastries, flowers, pizza, sausage, etc.

“Affogato” means “drowned” in Italian, and that’s what happens when you take a scoop of vanilla gelato (Italian ice cream) and drowned it in a shot of espresso. The hot espresso melts the gelato blending the flavors and textures.

Hot espresso and gelato mixes to make a simple, amazing dessert. Don’t have Gelato? You can substitute American ice cream for Italian gelato.

Isn’t Gelato just Ice Cream?

Gelato has less fat than ice cream, which produces a more intense taste. Gelato has less air in it than American ice cream. Finally, gelato is served at a warmer temperature than ice cream. All these differences affect the flavor.

More Ingredients, More Flavor

You don’t have to stop with 2 ingredients (espresso and gelato); you can add flavored liqueurs as a 3rd ingredient. You can try almond, hazelnut, Irish cream, chocolate, coffee, peppermint, coconut… flavored liqueurs.

You can take it a step further by sprinkling toppings on like chopped nuts, mini chocolate chips, chocolate or caramel sauce….

But what if I don’t have an espresso machine?

Don’t have an espresso machine? Substitute the shot of espresso with strong, hot coffee or heated, cold brewed coffee which is concentrated coffee.

European Heritage

Europe represents our family heritage. Both our families migrated to the USA after 1776, and after the Emancipation Proclamation of 1862.

We visited parts of Germany, Austria, France and Switzerland.

We’ve always been fascinated with history, both the good and the bad. In the USA, there’s more history on the east coast than the west coast, not counting native history and the Bible. Visiting Europe opened our eyes to a whole new (personal) level of history and connection.

Someday we would love to travel to Europe again. Sadly, times have changed since 2012, but we haven’t ruled out revisiting.

We aren’t just a market, we are Rustic Country Market Living.
