Never Underestimate the Power of a Pillow Cover

Changing pillow covers is a fast, affordable way to update decor without replacing furniture. Whether you’re adding a seasonal flair to a room, or updating your current decor theme. You can put a new pillow cover over an existing pillow (as long as it doesn’t show thru) without purchasing a new pillow insert.

I have a variety of coffee “decor” in my kitchen & dining room.

I Love Baskets (always have, always will)

Basket: noun, 1. a container made of twigs, rushes, thin strips of wood, or other flexible material woven together.

Wicker, wood, fabric, seagrass, rope, rattan, wire, metal, glass, twigs, leather… as long as it stores stuff and blends in with my decor, I love it! I also love decorative boxes and trays.

Instead of leaving a bunch of stuff randomly laying around creating clutter, I use baskets. I put books, videos, and CDs in baskets (on a shelf). I put small things like remotes, chargers w/cords, and dog toys in baskets. Even my arts and crafts supplies are stored neatly in baskets.

Baskets are great for organizing miscellaneous stuff.

Decorating on a Budget

I gotta confess, I’m an HGTV junkie. Several of the shows inspire me to want to redecorate my home over and over again. I can watch the same show again and again, and see something I never noticed before.

Let’s face it, we live in an immediate world, and most of us want what we want now.

There are so many times I’ve wanted a new look in my home, but my budget wouldn’t allow much. That’s when I start looking at what I already have and thinking about what I can do to change it for a fraction of the cost of buying something new.

Simply putting a new pillow cover on an old pillow can add a new splash of color, and with the advent of online shopping, the sky’s the limit on selection!

I was tired of these old, throw pillows. Instead of buying new ones, I bought new pillow covers at a fraction of the cost of new pillows.
Our living room has a cabin theme, so the new pillow covers fit right in. Even my husband likes them.

My next pillow upgrade? Our RV! I love to add my own touches to the RV’s factory decor.

Replace or Update?

Sometimes you just gotta do what you envision you wanna do.

Before…

I had wanted to change the look of our old, country dining room table, chairs and hutch instead of buying new furniture. I was tired of the dated look. I envisioned that the table, chairs and hutch could use some new color. Our current house has a lot of stainless steel and gray accents which inspired my new color choice.

I bought some charcoal gray chalk paint to update the set for a fraction of the price of buying a new dining set. I decided not to distress the chalk paint because the old white paint already had a natural aged look, and I loved how the charcoal looked next to the old white paint.

I decided the old, wood knobs on the hutch had to go, so I visited one of my favorite stores, Hobby Lobby. I found some antiqued silver/glass knobs to add to the hutch. The new look took our old dining set to a whole new level.

I love it!

Do you shop your own stuff?

I see potential in other people’s stuff, and (sometimes) even my own! (I’ve been known to shop my own stuff and reuse or re-purpose it.) Since we move more than average people,  our stuff doesn’t always fit in the same rooms as the previous home. I have an abundance of decor accessories that I use to make any house our home.

In our current home, I needed something in out master bathroom toilet closet to put extra rolls of toilet paper. Instead of investing in yet another decor item, I looked thru what I already have and came up with a small basket shelf I used to use in our office to store small office supplies.

Instead of just using it, I decided to add some color to it since our master bedroom and bath have a beach theme. In a short time, I converted the old shelf into something new, and saved myself the cost of a new bathroom cabinet, and it fit perfect on the short wall!

Next time you think you need something in your house, try shopping your own stuff first. Reusing your own stuff is a whole lot easier on the budget.
